Nintendo
decided
to
open
its
Nintendo
Switch
2
showcase
by
officially
unveiling
Mario
Kart:
World
which
will
launch
alongside
the
new
console
on
June
5.
As
the
long-awaited
follow-up
to
Mario
Kart
8,
this
latest
kart-racer
is
bumping
up
the
grid
size
to
impressive
26
characters
vying
for
first-place.
But
by
far
the
biggest
addition
is
the
open-world.
Every
track
takes
place
in
a
giant
interconnected
world,
and
between
races
you
will
be
able
to
hang
out
and
drive
around.
The
updated
Grand
Prix
mode
makes
use
of
this,
still
challenging
you
to
win
four
races
except
now
you
also
have
to
drive
from
race
to
race.
The
new
Knockout
mode
has
you
racing
from
one
end
of
the
map
to
the
other
and
at
each
checkpoint
the
racer
in
last
place
will
be
eliminated.
It’s
unclear
exactly
how
much
freedom
you’ll
have,
but
it’s
still
a
huge
leap
forward
for
the
series.
The
open-world
also
brings
real-time
weather
and
time
of
day,
meaning
you
might
up
racing
in
the
rain
at
night,
or
at
dawn
as
the
sun
creeps
over
the
horizon.
A
few
other
interesting
gameplay
changes
can
be
seen
in
the
trailer,
such
as
being
able
to
grind
on
rails
and
ride
along
walls.
At
one
point,
a
player
can
be
seen
using
a
wall
to
hop
up
onto
another
section
of
track.
