Sony has announced that they will be holding a Playstation Showcase event on May 24 at 1pm PT / 4pm ET / 9pm UK, streamed live on Youtube and Twitch. The show, which Sony states will be just over an hour long, will include looks at first-party PS5 and PS VR 2 titles, as well as some third-party games. Nothing specific has been confirmed.
The news confirms comments from Jeff Grubb and VGC’s owner and editor Andy Robinson last week, both of whom stated that they had heard about a Playstation Showcase being held at the end of May.
It’s about time, too. Sony has been quite quiet on what Playstation owners can look forward to over the next year or two, so I’m looking forward to getting a glimpse at what’s in store. I imagine a safe bet is a look at Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 which is set to feature two Spider-men and classic villain/anti-hero Venom.
And let’s not forget other rumours swirling that Sony and Konami may have agreed to some sort of exclusivity deal together on several projects said to include a Metal Gear Solid 3 remake, a new Castlevania game and something to do with Silent Hill. If that’s true then the Showcase could be playing host to some rather big announcements.
I also noted that the official blog post announcing the Showcase used this phrase: “as well as spellbinding games from our third-party partners and indie creators.” It’s likely nothing but I can’t help but wonder if this is a reference to From Software’s supposed next project after Armored Core 6 named Spellbound. According to the source, which originated from 4Chan so take it with a hefty pinch of salt, the game will feature a heavy focus on magic.
But putting aside pure speculation, Sony has plenty of stuff it could show off. Naughty Dog’s upcoming The Last of Us multiplayer game might get a debut, for example, or we might see Ghost of Tsushima 2 emerge from the shadows. Bend has been working on something since Days Gone, and Media Molecule might be ready to reveal their new project having announced that they will no longer support Dreams. None of these studios has released anything in over 3 years, aside from Naughty Dog remaking The Last of Us again, so they are all at a point where we could reasonably expect to see something from them.
Sony also has its new studios in the form of Firewall, Firesprite and Savage Games which may all be ready to show off their new games.
It’s exciting, and it doesn’t end there because the Showcase kicks off several weeks of events, including the Summer Games Fest and Xbox’s Games Showcase, both in June.
