Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls Sells Nearly Half A Million Copies

We’re a week into Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, so let’s take a look at the sales numbers, shall we?

These figures come from Alinea Analytics, so as always do take them with a pinch of salt. The company is frequently very accurate with its numbers, but can sometimes also be a little annoying, such as also counting people buying the premium edition upgrade for Halo: Campaign Evolved on Game Pass as a copy sold.

Anyway, Alinea claims that Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls has sold 485k copies across Steam and PS5 in its first week. The vast majority (74%) of those were on PS5, which makes sense because fighting games don’t tend to do as well on PC.

Of the 359,000 copies sold on PS5, 15.1% were physical, which amounts to 54,209 physical copies.

Fighting games don’t tend to sell well on PC anyway, but as Rhys Elliott at Alinea correctly reports, Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls has not been doing well on PC at all. It has been plagued by stuttering, frame-rate drops and unusually high CPU usage, with the performance problems also causing severe rollback spikes during online matches. It currently has a “mixed” user rating,

So, are these sales numbers good? Well, it’s a little hard to tell, actually.

On the one hand, the fighting game genre is a bit more niche, so nearly half a million is decent. Tekken 8 did a million on its first day alone, and Street Fighter 6 managed a million in the first 5 days. But those are big, established names.

Perhaps a better point of comparison is Arc System Works other fighting game, Guilty Gear Strive, which did 300k in its first week. That said, it remains well behind Dragon Ball FighterZ’s enormous two-million-unit opening.

On the other hand, this is also a first-party PlayStation game, and it has the Marvel name attached to it. Both of those things would normally come with higher expectations than normal.

Personally, for a first-party title from Sony and with the backing of Marvel – and considering how hyped up the game seemed to be online – I would have expected a bit more in the region of 750k-1m, but perhaps I’m vastly overestimating it.
