Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 DLC officially cancelled by Aspyr

Aspyr Media has finally confirmed that the planned DLC for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 has been cancelled, bringing an end to a long-running saga where the company refused to comment on the project long after it was supposed to launch.

To catch you up, dear reader, Aspyr Media published ports of both Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic games on Nintendo Switch last year. Both ports were fairly simplistic but did a decent job of bringing the classic RPGs to a modern audience. But the exciting thing was Aspyr announced plans to release DLC for Knights of the Old Republic 2 which would introduce a bunch of cut content back into the game. This content didn’t make it into the original Knights of the Old Republic 2 because the game was rushed out by Obsidian for a Christmas release. Best of all, the update would be free to anyone who owned the game.

The project was actually based on a fan mod which was designed to restore the missing content as well as fix a variety of issues with the game. You can find that mod over on the Steam Workshop. However, console gamers couldn’t access the mod, so Aspyr’s plans to bring an “official” version to their Switch ports were met with excitement.

Fans often describe Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 as “unfinished” without the mod. It adds deeper character interactions, missions, and even a revamped ending that accounted for your choices throughout the game.

The Restored Content DLC was supposed to launch in Q3 of last year but the release window came and went without Aspyr ever addressing it. Unsurprisingly, this did not go down well and Aspyr remained silent until now.

Frustratingly, the announcement doesn’t provide any details on why the DLC has been cancelled. Aspyr heavily featured the DLC as part of their marketing campaign for the launch of Knights of the Old Republic 2 on Switch. There’s little doubt that many of the people who bought were swayed by the promise of a free update which would greatly enhance the experience.

Cleary, Aspyr are aware of how bad this looks and is at least trying to make amends. By visiting https://support.aspyr.com/hc/en-us and providing proof that you purchased Knights of the Old Republic 2 on Switch you can claim a free key to 1 of these games:

  • Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II – The Sith Lords (Steam. Restored content mod can be played)
  • Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (Switch)
  • Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (Switch)
  • Star Wars: Republic Commando (Switch)
  • Star Wars Episode I: Racer (Switch)
  • Star Wars: Jedi Knight II Jedi Outcast (Switch)
  • Star Wars: Jedi Knight Jedi Academy (Switch)

As for Aspyr, things don’t seem to be going well for them at all. The team is supposed to be working on a proper remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, but in 2022 reports began circulating that the team had been removed from the project by studio owner Embracer and replaced by Sabre Interactive.

In July of 2022, Jason Schreier of Bloomberg published a report that described the remake as being in “serious trouble” and that the project had been paused.

Newer reports have suggested that both Lucas Films and Sony had been shown a demo of the game in action, and while Lucas seemed to like it, Sony felt it was not cinematic enough and since they were helping finance the game their opinion held a lot of weight. This seemingly led to some panic and Aspyr firing the project’s two lead developers.

There’s a lot more to this story and I’d highly recommend checking out the video below.
