The
weirdly
titled
A
Minecraft
Movie
has
had
its
first
weekend
at
the
box
office,
drawing
a
substantial
$301m
worldwide
gross,
along
with
bagging
the
title
of
biggest
domestic
debut
for
a
videogame
movie
of
$157m.
Considering
the
movie’s
budget
is
reported
to
be
$150m,
it’s
well
on
its
way
to
being
a
financial
hit.
Those
numbers
put
it
in
some
big
company,
too.
The
Super
Mario
Bros.
Movie,
which
is
still
the
highest
grossing
videogame
movie
of
all
time,
took
in
$146m
domestic
before
going
on
to
pull
in
$1.4b
worldwide.
It
also
means
A
Mincraft
Movie
is
on
the
path
to
defeating
Sonic
the
Hedgehog
3
which
is
currently
the
second
most
successful
videogame
movie.
Sonic
3
took
in
$236m
domestically
and
$255m
worldwide
on
its
opening
weekend,
going
on
to
bag
$491.
worldwide.
Currently,
A
Minecraft
Movies
worldwide
gross
total
puts
it
as
the
12th
most
successful
videogame
movie
to
date,
sandwiched
between
two
Resident
Evil
flicks
and
just
behind
the
first
Sonic
the
Hedgehog
movie.
Given
its
trajectory,
though,
it
looks
like
it’s
going
to
be
gunning
for
a
spot
in
the
top
3.
Critically
it
has
been
faced
with
a
rather
lukewarm
reaction,
holding
a
47%
rating
on
Rotten
Tomatoes,
but
the
general
audience
seems
to
be
having
a
good
time
with
it.
They’ve
given
it
87%
on
Rotten
Tomatoes,
and
a
quick
perusal
on
various
websites
indicate
that
adults
reckon
it’s
okay,
but
that
the
kids
seem
to
love
it.
Have
you
seen
the
movie?
If
so,
what
did
you
think?
My
youngest
niece
really
enjoys
Minecraft,
so
I’ve
been
pondering
taking
her
to
see
it.
