Resident distressed by impacts of mine in north west Queensland

In the wake of news of the collapse of the Mt Isa mine in Queensland, there were concerns that residents were being disturbed by the noise as the mine became more heavily involved in a major storm.

The Department of the Environment has urged people to avoid the nearby communities for now and prepare themselves to be disturbed if and when the mining continued.

The mine is located at Hinkley Point and is managed by a unit of Chinese State owned National Energy Investment Corporation of China (NSEC).

But residents in areas around Mt Isa have been told to remain vigilant and remain clear of the mine’s impact areas.

“I understand that there are some concerns about mining operations in the north west region,” an Environmental Health Authority spokesman said on Wednesday.

“We are offering some protection to residents in the areas of Mt Isa and its surroundings.

“There are specific safety measures in place to encourage residents to be aware of potential threats that could include hazardous noise and vibration as well as the potential risk from the impact on nearby communities and land use.”
