Following numerous rumours, Nintendo has announced that a live-action adaption of The Legend of Zelda is officially happening.

The announcement is rather barebones but does contain two bits of intriguing information. First, the movie will be directed by Wes Ball whose directorial history includes The Maze Runner films and who is also going to be directing the upcoming Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

Miyamoto himself will produce the movie. As for Avi Arad, he has credits in every single live-action Spider-Man movie in the MCU, most superhero movies ever created and heaps more. Both he and Miyamoto worked together on The Super Mario Bros. Movie which became a smash hit for Nintendo, earning itself well over $1 billion in the box office and being rather good to boot.

The other piece of juicy information is that Sony will be helping co-fund the project and will be handling its worldwide release. It’s known that Sony previously attempted to secure the rights to make a Mario movie which they did eventually get in 2014, but the project was scrapped. In the end, one of Sony’s rivals, Illumination, would be the one to create The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

While Sony Pictures and Sony Interactive Entertainment are separate branches of the company, it’s going to be hilarious to see Sony earning money from one of their rival’s biggest franchises. Sony will also be helping Nintendo lay another stepping stone on their path to multimedia domination if this new The Legend of Zelda film does anywhere near as well as The Super Mario Bros. Movie did.

Now, who would you cast as Link? I wouldn’t be shocked to see Spider-Man himself, Tom Holland, get considered. Not sure it’d work, though.
