Far Cry TV Series Will Be An “Anthology”

Following some leaks, the existence of a TV show based on Ubisoft’s Far Cry games has been officially confirmed. FX ordered up the project, which will stream on Hulu in the US and Disney+ internationally.

Ubisoft’s official tweet revealed that the new series will an anthology, following the templates of the games with each season offering up a new setting and cast.

The project is being led by FX producers Rob Mac, Creator of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Executive Producer of the Emmy-winning Welcome to Wrexham, and Noah Hawley, creator of FX’s anthology series Fargo and Alien: Earth.

Rob Mac will also apparently be starring.

“FX has had magnificent partnerships with Rob Mac and Noah Hawley for a combined six series and 32 seasons of television, and we couldn’t be more excited that they are teaming up for Far Cry,” said Nick Grad, President, FX Entertainment via a Ubisoft press release.

“Getting to work alongside Noah Hawley is a dream realized,” said Mac. “Ubisoft has been remarkably generous, entrusting us with one of the most iconic video-game worlds ever created. And through it all, my FX family continues to lift me up with their constant belief and support.”

“What I love about the Far Cry game franchise is it’s an anthology. Each game is a variation of a theme, the same way each season of Fargo is a variation on a theme,” said Hawley. “To create a big action show that can change from year to year, while always exploring the nature of humanity through this complex and chaotic lens is a dream come true.”

No release date for the series has been announced just yet, so presumably we won’t be seeing it for a while.

It’ll be interesting to see if the TV show leans heavily on the game’s established storylines, therefore having essentially six seasons worth of content ready to adapt, or will just be more loosely based on them.

I can’t help but think if they just base it on the game’s though, then this will end up being a generic action series that has little do with the games. The Far Cry titles have gameplay that tie them all together, but when examined from a narrative perspective, there’s not really much that ties them together thematically or narratively. Once you remove the gameplay, what makes Far Cry…well, Far Cry? The TV show will need to figure that out.

And let’s not forget that the original Far Cry involved genetically mutated creatures called Trigens. I wonder if they’ll do that storyline?
