Ubisoft’s Open World Star Wars Game Reported to Launch Before March 2024

Back in 2021 reports began circulating that Ubisoft developer Massive, best known for The Division and The Division 2, were working on a brand new open world Star Wars game in partnership with the then newly formed Lucasfilm Games. Since then, though, news of the project has been largely non-existent.

But now we have some word of its planned release date, courtesy of the folks over at Kotaku. According to them, two sources claim that the game will be release by March of 2024.

Quite recently Ubisoft had to report its largest operating loss in its history. However, it was quick to assuage fears by announcing that it would be ramping up the amount of developers working on its flagship Assassin’s Creed series by 40%, raising the total from around 2000 people to 2800 people.

At the same time, Ubisoft also announced its release schedule for its current fiscal year which ends on March 31st, 2024. 7 games were named as coming within the next 12 months (Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Mobile, Tom Clancy’s The Division Resurgence, Skull and Bones, The Crew Motorfest, XDefiant) but they also mentioned “another large game” that was not named.

According to Kotaku this unnamed release is the upcoming Star Wars open world game. However, Kotaku’s sources also told the site that “the target is likely too ambitious,” and that they expect the release date to be pushed back into the next fiscal year.

Ubisoft has a Ubisoft Forward event due to be livestreamed on June 12th, so if Ubisoft is confident that their Star Wars title will launch within the year then I would expect to see it shown off for the first time. If it’s not there, I think that will be an indication that it either has already been delayed or is expected to be delayed.

As for the game itself, I have mixed feelings on this one. The Star Wars franchise has a lot of scope for developers to create a variety of different experiences. However, I’m not sure Ubisoft is the developer to really take the license and do something creative with it. Instead, I’m worried it’s going to follow the now-standard Ubisoft open world formula.

What do you think: are you looking forward to Ubisoft’s take on Star Wars?
