PlayStation Is Now Letting You Write User Reviews

Have you ever wanted to know what the world thinks about that obscure little game you found on the PlayStation Store? Well, now you can! Sony has rolled out written user reviews in a new update.

Written user reviews have been in testing for a little while now but seems to be getting rolled out globally.

The system asks that you digitally own the game in question – actually having played it is not required – and as long as that criteria is met, you can drop up to 4000 words explaining how or why game X sucks/is awesome. There’s also an option for a review title, and even a checkbox for whether it includes spoilers.

You may have noticed I specified that it must be digitally owned – physical games you own do not count, and you won’t be able to leave reviews for them.

At the moment, these user reviews are limited to the web-based PlayStation store only and do not appear on the console. That makes the whole endeavour seem a tad pointless since most people probably interact with the store on their console, but perhaps there are plans to let the written user reviews appear on there at a later date.

Personally, there are a bunch of things I’d rather PlayStation fixed on the store first. Like, how in the hell can the web-based storefront still not display screenshots and trailers? And across both it and the console storefront, there’s still no proper DLC filtering option, new games often don’t appear when searching by new releases and a host of other things that need to be sorted out.

But going back to the user reviews, they’ve always been a divisive thing. They’ve been a major part of Steam for years now, and can be extremely useful when purchasing games. On the other hand, they can also be a pain in the arse as some people don’t seem to think anything other than 1 and 5 stars exist, or will leave highly negative or positive reviews based on things outside of the game.

So, will you be dropping any reviews for your library of games?
