Nonprofit boards play a critical role in the nonprofit governance. They are responsible for oversight and strategic planning and accountability as well as financial stewardship. The Board is also accountable for ensuring that the company is transparent and ethical with donors and the community. This is not a simple job. There are many challenges that the Board faces which require a substantial commitment of time and resources from all members of the board. This is why it’s vital to be able to have the most qualified people on your Board.
A good Board is comprised of a diverse group of people with a range of skills, backgrounds, and perspectives that are in line with the organization’s mission. This provides the Board with a wide range of knowledge and experience that allows it to make informed decisions and help guide the organization in the proper direction. The Board should regularly evaluate its own performance and effectiveness, and provide regular training.
The Board must be focused on detail and have a thorough understanding of the bigger picture. This includes assessing the extent to that the financial activity is in line with the budget as well as determining the costs of programs and services, and if they are appropriate costs, and implementing internal controls to prevent theft and loss or confusion.
In addition to these particular responsibility, the Board must be committed to serving as advocates and ambassadors for the organization. They must assist the Executive Director create and manage the public brand for the organization.
